Busy little birds...

We saw some innovative work in the studio this week as our children dived into our project study on birds. The children were primarily self-directed in these efforts! My initial group primarily narrowed their questions into inquiries about how birds fly (and "Do pigeons make milk?" Believe it or not they do!). However, the second group to come in, while still interested in birds, took it in a completely different direction...

Building "nests" from recyclables and then exploring bird seed in the sensory table, which lead to an amazing "experience" creating cakes for the birds!

Just a few of the comments I heard along the way...

M: If I eat it I don't think it will hurt the birds...
Ms. H: If you eat it you think the birds can eat it?
T: I'm not going to eat this!
Ms. H: Should people eat bird seeds?
T: No, only birds.
M: I think the birds will like mine the best.
K: Well we all did the same things.
Ka: I'm not making for the birds, I'm making something.
K: It stinks!
M: Can I use some vegetable oil in this? Awesome, it makes it bubbly!
Ka: Our hands are colorful.
K: The birds are going to love this!
Ka: It's oil, seeds, colorful, mix, and then dry.
Ms. H: These [candy pieces] are not for eating, they are for the birds.
K: They're for the birds or your potions...you're the best!
